Hingham is the South Shore's walkable town, and that alone makes it distinctive in a region defined by cars and driveways.

The town's Lincoln Street corridor runs from Hingham Harbor through a genuinely walkable downtown lined with independent shops, restaurants, and cafes, past the Old Ship Church (built in 1681, America's oldest continuously used wooden church), and up toward the residential neighborhoods above. Few New England towns have this kind of continuous walkable urbanism in a coastal setting.

The town is also the South Shore's closest to Boston, which has shaped its identity for decades. The Hingham commuter rail line and, more recently, the Hingham-to-Boston commuter boat make Hingham the easiest South Shore town from which to work in the city. That has attracted a specific demographic: professionals who want an active downtown, families who prioritize schools and walkability, and empty-nesters returning from further suburbs to a more urban feel.

World's End, the 250-acre preserved peninsula managed by The Trustees of Reservations, sits at the edge of the town and provides some of the most photographed landscape in coastal New England. Old Ward Two, the historic neighborhood around the harbor, includes some of the town's most sought-after and highest-priced homes.

Home prices in Hingham have risen substantially over the past two decades and are now among the highest on the South Shore. The town is not the value play it once was, but it remains the region's most livable coastal option for buyers who want a real downtown, coastal geography, and preserved history all in one place.
