A working
harbor town.

Scituate is what many South Shore towns used to be, and what only a few still are: a working coastal community with real character.

The town centers on its harbor, one of the most active on the South Shore. The Scituate Lighthouse (built in 1811) stands at its entrance, and the harbor itself remains genuinely working: fishing boats, recreational vessels, the Coast Guard, and the Irish Mossers who used to gather sea moss from the ledges just offshore.

That Irish-American heritage still defines much of the town's character. St. Patrick's Day is a major event, the Scituate Etruscans (as a nod to the Irish Mossers) show up in local iconography, and generations of families have made Scituate home. It is one of the few Boston-area coastal towns where local identity has survived the region's demographic shifts largely intact.

Geographically, Scituate is one of the most varied towns on the South Shore. The Cliff and Sand Hills offer some of the most dramatic coastline in the region. Peggotty Beach and Minot provide classic South Shore beaches. Humarock is a distinctive peninsula neighborhood accessed by bridge. North Scituate has its own commuter rail station and village center.

Home prices vary widely across the town, from more accessible options in North Scituate to premium waterfront estates on the Cliff. That variety makes Scituate one of the more approachable South Shore coastal markets for buyers who might otherwise be priced out of Cohasset or Duxbury.
